Sprint Cross-City Route
Walsall to Birmingham Airport and Solihull A34/A45
The A34/A45 Sprint route will be the first uninterrupted cross-city route, connecting Walsall town centre to Birmingham Airport and Solihull.
Sprint will introduce priority signalling, extended bus lanes and a swift boarding experience to improve journey times, service reliability and connectivity across the region. Journey time between Walsall and Birmingham City Centre are set to improve on average by 20% at peak times.
Existing bus services will also be able to benefit from the newly introduced priority signalling meaning over 30 million trips per year on the A34 and A45 experiencing quicker and more reliable journey times.
The new route will offer an express, zero-emission service, with the proposed operator indicating that they will cover the full cost for the vehicles. Expert analysis has revealed a return on investment to the Birmingham economy of at least £2.40 for every £1 spent on developing Sprint.
Funding for the first phase of the Walsall to Birmingham Airport and Solihull A34/A45 route was approved by the WMCA Board in February 2020. The project will shortly begin the delivery phase, with construction work expected to begin imminently.
As part of the development for the A34/A45 Sprint route there has been significant consultation and engagement with local residents, business and community groups and transport professionals. Feedback from these key groups has been taken on board and revisions to the route have been made a result.
Transport for West Midlands is committed to ensuring that all residents, businesses and partners are kept engaged and informed on the development of the Sprint project.
