Continuing disruption to rail and bus services

People were again being urged to check before they travel this afternoon (Tuesday May 16) after the discovery of a World War II bomb in Birmingham continued to cause disruption for rail and bus services.

The bomb was found yesterday in Aston near to Salford Circus and the Aston Expressway and M6 North/South entry/exit slip roads at J6 Spaghetti Junction remain closed today causing knock-on congestion and delays.

Local rail services between Birmingham and Lichfield are also affected.

Transport for West Midlands (TfWM), part of the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), has advised travellers to go to www.networkwestmidlands.com/plan-your-journey/disruptions/ for the very latest travel updates or follow @networkwm @londonmidland and @nxwestmidlands on Twitter.

Some road closures remain in place at Salford Circus / Lichfield Rd and other surrounding roads with people warned to expect heavy traffic and long delays in this area.

Bus services 65, 66, 67, X3, X4, X5 and X14 are being diverted via Cuckoo Rd, Heartlands Parkway, Goodrick Way, Walter St and Rocky Lane before reverting to normal line of route.

Additional diversions may also be required with further possible delays to routes as motorists find alternative routes. With traffic being diverted across a wide area passengers are being advised to also expect delays to bus services around north and east Birmingham.

On the railways, all train services on the Cross City North line between Birmingham New Street and Lichfield have been suspended for the rest of the day.

Rail passengers are being advised to use National Express West Midlands bus routes 14, 65, 67, X3, X4, X5 & X14, although these are also being affected by the incident and are subject to diversions.

Road transport between Sutton Coldfield and Lichfield Trent Valley is being laid on for affected rail passengers and additional transport has been provided between Lichfield City and Lichfield Trent Valley.

Train operator Cross Country is accepting passengers between Nuneaton and Birmingham New Street in both directions and between Tamworth and Birmingham New Street in both directions until further notice.

Additional delays are possible on the Chase Line with Duddeston, Aston, Witton and Perry Barr stations not being served. Ticket acceptance with National Express West Midlands buses is also in place from these stations.

The latest information on bus and rail services will continue to be updated on www.networkwestmidlands.com throughout the day.
