M40 Junction 16 and M42 Junctions 3 and 4

What’s happening?

Major transport improvements are happening in the east of Birmingham and Solihull area. These include: 

  • HS2 - Britain’s new high-speed railway
  • improvements to junction 6 of the M42
  • the new Sprint bus route along the A45

During the work, the way you travel in the area will change. There will be disruption to: 

  • junction 6 of the M42
  • the A452
  • the A446
  • the A45

M40 Junction 16 and M42 Junctions 3 and 4

The following closures will be in place on the north and/or southbound carriageway from the M40 junction 16 to the M42 junctions 3 to 4 as follows:

10 - 24 January 2022

  • M42 junction 3 – 3a northbound, lanes 1 and 2

19 - 21 January 2022

  • M40 junction 16 – M42 junction 3a northbound, lanes 1 and 2

24 - 28 January 2022

  • M42 junction 3a – 3 southbound, lanes 1 and 2

31 January - 11 February 2022

  • M42 junction 3a – 4 northbound and southbound, lanes 2 and 3

Lane closures will be in place on weeknights, between 9pm and 6am. 

Travel tips

You will still be able to get to where you need to go, but consider the following:

Plan ahead and leave more time for your journey. If you travel, you’ll need more time for your journey to take account of changes and diversions.
