Last updated: 18 May 2021

What’s happening?

£700m is set to be invested in the regeneration of Perry Barr between now and 2031, helping to create a place that is fit for the future, safe, green and connected. The investment will bring about positive change, improving the quality of life for those that live in Perry Barr – and creating new opportunities now and for generations to come.

A lot of the construction activity will take place between now and 2022, which will affect journeys between Walsall and Birmingham and around Perry Barr.

The plans include:

  • A34 Highways Improvement Scheme
  • Construction of a new bus rapid transit route; Sprint
  • Improvements to Perry Barr Interchange
  • Redevelopment of Alexander Stadium
  • Construction of Perry Barr Village

A34 Highways Improvement Scheme

Phase two of the Perry Barr Highway Scheme will see some major changes to roads and traffic flows through Perry Barr, specifically on the A34. Phase two will create a new road layout, providing better access to public transport and improving facilities for cycling and walking.

Phase two will run from January to the end of 2021 with major works due to take place in this phase including:

  • The removal of the flyover
  • Carriageway widening
  • Works to the new bridge at Birchfield Island

The flyover has now been removed and there remains a temporary traffic layout in place. Traffic signals have been installed to manage traffic and reduce congestion at the following locations:

  • Harrier Way
  • One Stop Crossing
  • Change of timings at Aldridge Road

There are diversions in place to support the works which are detailed in the map below.

Access to the One Stop Shopping Centre will be maintained throughout the works.

Travel tips

You will still be able to get to where you need to go, but consider the following:

Plan ahead. delays are expected so leave more time for your journey.
Consider using another route where possible. Check apps that show traffic levels before leaving.
Consider walking or cycling shorter journeys. where possible, to reduce congestion on the A34 and local roads. Public transport services are operating but fewer people are able to travel.
Drivers. If you use the A34 into Birmingham from Walsall or M6 J7 you may want to consider using the M6 Aston Expressway to access Birmingham City Centre.
