Commonwealth Games 2022

What's happening?

The Commonwealth Games will take place across the West Midlands in the summer of 2022. It will be a once in a lifetime opportunity to put the city and the region on the map. It will help deliver a healthier, happier, better connected and more prosperous region for us all, with new and upgraded sports facilities, affordable housing and by creating thousands of volunteer and job opportunities. The positive effects of the Games will be felt for generations to come and transport has an important role to play in making it all happen.

We’ve developed a plan, in partnership with Birmingham 2022 and local authorities across the West Midlands, which explains how we hope to help deliver a truly unforgettable Games. A key focus of the draft plan, known as the ‘Games Strategic Transport Plan’ is to make sure residents and businesses in the West Midlands can continue to get from A to B while over 1 million visitors and more than 12,000 athletes, officials, and international media make their way around the region to training and competition venues.

The draft plan covers things like how we will plan transport, outlines how extra capacity will be built into the network and provides information about the transport projects we are accelerating in time for the Games, in order to help us move thousands of extra people around our transport network.

Last year we asked you if the five guiding principles of the draft plan were the right approach to transport planning for the games.

Keeping you up to date

As our plans develop and we get closer to the opening ceremony, there will be more opportunities for you to give your feedback.

By the end of 2021 we will know which routes will be used by athletes to get to venues. These are known as Games Routes. At that point, we’ll speak to residents and businesses we think might be affected for a short period, giving you the opportunity to influence our plans by telling us what matters to you. Your views will be important in ensuring the transport network works for everyone.

Then in 2022, as we get ready to showcase the West Midlands to the world, we’ll explain how transport will work and launch a journey planner to help you understand and plan your journeys during the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. You can find out more about the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games here.
