Midlands Future Mobility Testbed
The West Midlands is leading real-world, open road CAV operation– working beyond the test track.
The Midlands Future Mobility testbed is the major CAV trial soon to be operating in the region and is the largest in the UK. The project consists of the following:
- A network of over 300 km of roads in Coventry, Birmingham, and Solihull and the wider West Midlands Region will form this world-class, “real-world” UK environment for developing next generation CAVs following £31m of investment by Government and the private sector.
- Covering the most diverse range of roads, junctions and traffic measures in the world, it will also include the University of Warwick campus – a mini city in itself.
- 5G ready and with smart monitoring systems, vehicles will be connected via high-speed, high-capacity wireless infrastructure across the whole route, ensuring no loss of signal
TfWM will use the environment to trial new modes of transport, services and technologies, after the Government’s decision last year to name the West Midlands as the UK’s first Future Mobility Zone. Following the announcement, which highlighted the West Midlands’ position in the heart of the UK with strong transport links.
Engineering and professional services consultancy, WSP has already carried out the feasibility study and design phases for the Midlands Future Mobility project. The deliver phase will include installing roadside units to enable communication with CAV services on vehicles. Other technologies to be rolled out include hi-tech weather stations, live cameras and GNSS correction towers to provide high accuracy positioning for vehicles using GPS data.
Once complete, the facility will be available, through Midlands Future Mobility, for manufacturers of CAV vehicles and systems to trial Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) services – driving research and development and supporting TfWM as it pursues its Future Mobility Programme.
“The Midlands Future Mobility project is the latest example of how the West Midlands is becoming a world-class location for CAV developers.” Andy Street
The tender invitation has been submitted, and TfWM will soon appoint a construction partner for the delivery and commissioning stages of the CAV facility.
