Smarter Travel for the Future
The way people live in cities is changing. The continued growth of city regions such as Birmingham and the West Midlands, together with the need to reduce the impact of our growing population on the environment mean that we need to think about different ways of living our lives.
Changing the way that individuals travel around will be key to the success of cities in the future. How can the West Midlands be a leader in developing and delivering intelligent and sustainable mobility?
Our aim is that the West Midlands will have an effective and well used intelligent mobility solution which supports integrated travel across all means of transport. People and businesses will be enabled and incentivised to make cost effective, informed and sustainable travel choices using 'live' travel information and seamless payment systems which span multiple modes.
We will work with others to ensure that these developments in technology and innovation are encouraged and harnessed effectively.
Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAV)
We have a long and proud history of vehicle manufacturing in the West Midlands – you could say it’s in our soul – and TfWM is a key partner in a number of projects to help test and develop Connected and Autonomous Vehicle (CAV) technology.
This technology will help manage the way vehicles, including public transport, use our roads in the future so that journeys are more efficient and reliable. But they will also help keep our region at the forefront of the next wave of automotive technology and manufacture, creating well paid, future-proof jobs for local people.
One of these projects is Midlands Future Mobility, which is using more than 50 miles of 'real world' roads in Coventry, Solihull and Birmingham for CAV developers to not only come and test their new technology but bring their manufacturing operations with them. This is helping to create a cluster effect that is establishing the West Midlands as a premier location for CAV-related organisations and companies.
