Zero Tolerance to Road Harm

Together, we’re making West Midlands roads safer.

Over 1,000 people were killed or seriously injured on West Midlands roads last year.

The West Midlands Road Safety Partnership is working to end road harm through education, enforcement, and support for victims.

About the campaign

As part of National Road Safety Week 2025, the West Midlands Road Safety Partnership has created a powerful public installation, the Letter Tree, in Birmingham’s Brindleyplace.

From its branches hang letters written by RoadPeace members, each one a personal reflection on how dangerous driving has changed their lives.

This will be at Central Square in Brindleyplace from 19 November until 23 November.

In front of the tree, a post box invites visitors to write their own thoughts, reflections, and pledges to take action for safer roads.

This campaign is about more than awareness, it’s about taking action. Every pledge, story, and conversation moves us closer to our shared goal of Zero Tolerance to Road Harm.

The letters on the tree are real messages from people who’ve been seriously impacted by dangerous driving.

They’ve shared their words so others might think twice before taking risks on the road.

How we're tackling Road Safety

The West Midlands Road Safety Partnership has taken tangible, measurable actions over the last year.

The region now has the UK’s first Regional Road Safety Commissioner, coordinating action across all members to deliver Vision Zero.

Together, we’ve achieved an 18% reduction in serious casualties so far in 2025.

Enforcement and policing

  • Speed enforcement has tripled across the region.
  • 18 multi-agency operations stopped 601 vehicles and made 19 arrests.
  • Extra staff now review dashcam and speed camera footage to catch dangerous drivers faster.
  • 700 uninsured vehicles were seized in one month alone.

Technology and infrastructure

  • AI near-miss detection spots potential collisions before they happen.
  • Local councils are using data to install safer crossings and junctions.
  • School Streets reduce traffic around schools at busy times.
