Interchange - M42 J6

Solihull will be home to the new HS2 Interchange Station. Close to the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) and Birmingham Airport - it will be a major gateway station for the West Midlands region, connecting passengers to Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool, and Manchester city centres.

HS2 will begin running between 2029 and 2033 when the section between London and the West Midlands is complete, and services will expand as new sections of the network are built.

There will be several essential road closures and disruptions required to help facilitate the building of HS2 in this area over the coming years.

Alongside the HS2 related works, National Highways are progressing with the £282m improvement project M42 junction 6. The project is designed to increase capacity and reduce congestion, improve access to Birmingham Airport and other key businesses and improve access for cyclists and walkers.

In order to prepare for the construction of HS2, some parts of the M42 motorway will be closed over weekends.

Works taking place include the installation of beams for the M42 Motorway Box in Solihull and of the deck on the Water Orton Viaducts across the motorway in North Warwickshire.

HS2 closures will be taking place from 21.00 Friday 14 August to 05.00 Monday 17 August 2026.

The following locations will be affected:

• M42 between junctions 6 to 9 northbound
• M42 between junctions 9 to 6 southbound (including M6 J4a southbound link to M42 in both directions
• M6 northbound J3a link to M6 toll T1 and M6 Toll southbound from T2.

A fully signed diversion route will be in place throughout the full weekend closures.

A further weekend closure at these locations will take place from 21.00 Friday 18 September to 05.00 Monday 21 September 2026.
