Birmingham New Street closure
Starts 24 December 2026 until 28 December 2026
Last updated: 27 October 2026
What’s happening?
If you usually travel to, from, or change trains at Birmingham New Street, your journey will be affected on Christmas Eve (Thursday 24 December), Sunday 27 December and Bank Holiday Monday (28 December) 2026.
Please note: Trains do not run on Christmas Day or Boxing Day
All local, regional and long-distance rail journeys using the following operators that normally use Birmingham New Street will be affected:
- West Midlands Rail services in the region will be affected by the closure
- London Northwestern
- Cross Country
- Avanti
- Transport for Wales
Dedicated rail-replacement buses will take passengers on regional and long-distance journeys, as part of the journey ticket. Please check with your operator for more details.
Chiltern Railway
Chiltern Rail services will continue to operate through Moor Street Queensway and Snow Hill stations.
Ticket Acceptance on local bus networks
Those travelling locally on Camp Hill and Cross City lines will be able to use train tickets on regular bus services on the local National Express bus network.
Journeys will take longer, and buses may be busier than in previous years during the festive season.
Birmingham New Street station plays an important role in how people move around the city centre, so the station building will remain open during the engineering work, allowing people to continue accessing shops, including Grand Central, and the wider city centre.
Birmingham New Street Christmas closure 2026
These works form part of a 3-year, £13m Network Rail programme to renew ageing overhead line equipment through the station.
The first phase of work will take place from Christmas Eve (Thursday 24 December) to Bank Holiday Monday (28 December) 2026.
Further work is expected to take place over the same Christmas period in 2027 and 2028 as the programme continues.
