Last updated: 8 October 2025

What’s happening?

A large investment programme is taking place in the borough of Dudley.

A number of key projects have already been completed with construction for further projects in the town centre and surrounding areas taking place alongside each other over the next couple of years.

MMA Tram construction activity will continue throughout 2025 and the old Dudley bus station site is undergoing a significant redevelopment to become the modern and sustainable Dudley Bus Interchange.

Highway works are also taking place at Burnt Tree Junction to improve bus journey times and help those walking and cycling around the main roads in this area.

Burnt Tree

From 3 November 2025, works will begin on the highway at Burnt Tree Junction in Dudley and on the border with Sandwell.

This project is part of a larger scheme to improve bus journey times and help those walking and cycling around the main roads in the area.

There will be new crossing points which will improve safety and encourage better connection to existing and upcoming paths and cycleways on the A4123 and A461 as well as to Merry Hill in the future.

Highway works include:
  • A phased programme of lane closures on various routes running through this busy regional traffic junction
  • Installation of temporary traffic lights for certain phases of the works
  • Suspension of current bus lanes and pedestrian crossings and walkways

The works will start on 3 November and will take place in various phases for up to 9 months with delays to journey times for bus users and motorists

Bus Stop Changes

Some bus stops may be suspended during these works.

There will be changes to NX bus route 74 and the 126 bus service will be diverted away from Burnt Tree into Dudley.

Bus service 126 which will be diverted via Regent Road and Oakham Road and the timetables for the 82 and 83 are being amended.  Bus route 74 is being split into 2 services, one running between Birmingham and West Bromwich and another to and from West Bromwich and Dudley.

Other bus services may encounter some delays travelling through the junction for the duration of the works.

You will be able to get where you are travelling to by bus. Please plan ahead and allow more time for your bus journey.

Pedestrians and Cyclists

For your own safety, please follow all signed pedestrian and cyclng routes through the works area. Burnt Tree Junction will remain open to pedestrians and cyclists.

Other Traffic

To reduce congestion in the area, please avoid travelling through Burnt Tree Junction and use alternative routes where possible.

Travel tips

You will still be able to get to where you need to go, but consider the following:

Consider alternative route where possible to avoid the disruption completely. If you are travelling towards Waterfront Way, an alternative route can be to continue further along the A4036 Pedmore Road and access via The Gateway.
You may wish to use the motorway to travel to and from Wolverhampton and Birmingham. Rather than travelling through the affected Burnt Tree junction.
Bus service 74 will be altered and bus service 126 diverted.. All other bus routes will not be altered during these works but journeys on 11, 11A, 14A, 87P, 111, 215, and 229. Bus services may take longer so plan your bus journey and allow more time for travel.
Can you change the time you travel?. Avoid peak times where possible especially between 07:00-09:00 and 14:00 – 16:00 to reduce delays. There will be delays to car and bus journeys by these works. The area sees more congestion at these times.
