Dudley Interchange

The new Dudley Interchange is a key part the regeneration of Dudley Town Centre, a transport hub that will allow passengers to switch seamlessly between bus services and the Wednesbury to Brierley Hill Metro extension.

The Transport for West Midlands scheme is just one in a series of major regeneration projects which are are set to transform Dudley town centre. This will help in connecting residents to jobs, education and training opportunities as well as leisure and healthcare facilities.

The latest drone footage showcases the significant progress made at Dudley Interchange over the past month as the project continues to move closer to completion. 

Inside the building, walls are now being painted and all floors have been screeded in preparation for tiling. The bright, spacious interior is beginning to reveal the welcoming environment that passengers will enjoy when the facility opens. Tiling is complete on the second-floor level, which will provide access to the tram stop, while wide lifts have been installed nearby to improve accessibility. Suspended ceilings have also been fitted throughout back-of-house areas and washrooms. 

The building includes an accessible toilet, alongside a separate Changing Places facility equipped with an overhead hoist, changing bench and shower to support passengers with more complex accessibility requirements. Installation of the hearing loop system is also complete, helping to ensure the interchange is accessible to as many passengers as possible. 

On the north side of the building, overlooking Dudley Castle and Birmingham Street, concrete bases for the amphitheatre seating and steps have been installed. Alongside the S-bend access ramp, this area will create an attractive public space where visitors can pause, meet and enjoy views across the town. 

Around the tram stop, the public realm is taking shape with re-used granite paving blocks and new hard landscaping. Cycle parking for more than 12 bicycles has been installed, leading into an open plaza that will include planters and outdoor seating. Together, these features complement the modern glazed building and create an attractive gateway into Dudley town centre. 

The interchange will also be the first in the Midlands to operate a drive-in, reverse-out bus operation, an innovative design that will improve safety for pedestrians moving through the site. 

Taylor Woodrow is the main contractor for the project and construction has been underway since summer 2025. The interchange is set to open and be used by passengers in 2026.
