Hagley Road

We're planning changes to Hagley Road to make your journeys quicker, easier and safer.

In phase 1, we're looking to make improvements from Five Ways roundabout to the junction of Hagley Road and Portland Road.

Proposed changes include new bus lanes, a segregated cycle lane and improved traffic signals to improve the flow of traffic.

Why it's happening

We're aiming to reduce delays, make it safer for cyclists and develop Hagley Road into a route that is also eco-friendly.

Currently, there are nine bus routes with over 25 services running through this area as well as eight trams going back and forth every hour in each direction on Hagley Road. And from 2026, the frequency of Metro running along this portion of Hagley Road will increase to 12 trams per hour.

Combining our Hagley Road works with our other travel schemes – Cross City Bus and Midland Metro – will mean improved connections and more regular and reliable journey times along Hagley Road and across our region.

Project benefits

The new interventions will open up travel to the local community and provide a variety of benefits including:

  • Reducing journey times for the 37,800 passengers using buses in this area every day.
  • Making it safer for cyclists and improving connectivity.
  • Making it safer for pedestrians to cross the road.
  • Support local shops and improve loading without affecting traffic flow or road safety.
  • Upgrading the traffic signals and improving co-ordination to make traffic flow smoother and reduce delays for all drivers.
  • Improving the environment and helping with climate change.
