Contactless payments across bus and tram services
We are developing a new contactless payment system for bus and tram travel in the West Midlands.
The system will make it easier to pay the best fare when you travel on services run by different operators.
It is not available yet. We expect to start introducing the system in spring or summer 2027.
How it will work
You will be able to use a contactless bank card or mobile payment wallet on participating bus and tram services.
The system will automatically work out the best fare for your journeys. It will cap the amount you pay each day or week.
This means you will not need to:
-
decide which ticket to buy before you travel
-
buy separate tickets when you use services run by different operators
-
work out the cheapest option for your journeys
Why we are developing a new system
Different companies run bus and tram services in the West Midlands.
The new system will bring together journey information from participating operators. This will allow it to calculate the right fare when you travel across the network.
When it will be available
We expect to start introducing the system in the West Midlands in spring or summer 2027.
It could expand to other types of public transport and other areas in the future.
Working with our partners
We are working with bus operators, the Department for Transport and Midlands Connect to develop the system.
Littlepay has been appointed to deliver the new contactless payment system.
Tickets available now
The new contactless system is still in development.
